Power To The People: World’s first power-steering for classic VW Campers from Danbury

In a world first, Danbury Motorcaravans has unveiled a brand new feature for its classic Type 2 campers in 2010: Power steering!

The result of more than a year’s technological research and development by six Danbury engineers and a team of outside experts, the new speed-sensitive power-steering and direct drive option is available across all of its brand-new Type 2 campervan rangeDanbury is offering the groundbreaking feature as a direct result of demand from its customers wanting to combine modern everyday driving comfort & convenience with the classic VW design. Intelligent speed-sensitive electronics means that it reacts more sensitively when manoeuvring at low speeds and when parking, whilst holding steady on motorway driving. Jason Jones, sales director at Danbury Motorcaravans, said: “There’ll always be some customers who love the original, more ‘relaxed’ steering charm of the Type 2 camper. Our fantastic new power steering option is for those who want a more responsive feel, or are maybe using their Danbury as their everyday ride through city traffic and to the supermarket as well as on country lanes and campsite fields.” Initial reaction from both staff and customers has been extremely positive, with the first customer to test drive the new system commenting, “Incredible, it’s chalk and cheese compared with the standard steering. There’s a much more positive feel and it’s so precise for parking. There’s no play on the wheel, which is an absolute delight and brings it bang up to 2010. I can’t wait to have it retro-fitted!” To showcase the new option, Danbury has created a video of the first ever customer test drive, which is available for fans to watch via its official Page on Facebook. The power steering and direct drive package is available for £3999 Inc VAT, but as a limited special offer Danbury will offer you a special price of £3499 inc VAT when factory-fitted on new vehicle orders. It is also available as a retro-fit for £3999 Including VAT on all used Danbury water-cooled right hand drive Volkswagen Type 2 campers only. Both come with a full one year warranty. A manual version is also available without the power steering but still with the modern ‘rack and pinion’ direct drive steering for just £1199 inc VAT if ordered with the vehicle new or retro fitted for £2599 inc VAT to used vehicles. All options are only available on right hand drive water cooled models. The 2010 Danbury classic VW Campers also feature two subtle design upgrades. Volkswagen has added a rear high-level brake light for greater safety and visibility, and has also given the front water-cooled grill a sleeker, lower profile. Danbury can also colour-code the grill to match the 1000s of body paint colours available, and it can also be fitted with a dummy wheel cover, also colour-coded, for the ultimate retro look. Although they ceased production in Europe exactly 30 years ago, Volkswagen still manufactures its iconic ‘Type 2’ vehicle. These are hand-converted into a modern Camper van by Danbury, the only official importer in the UK and the biggest retailer of new Type 2 VW Campers in the world. Specifications can include full leather seats, double or king-size beds, gas oven, a dedicated iPod connection, state-of-the-art hi-fi system, flatscreen TV with Freeview and DVD player, and a marine-grade kitchen and living space. Unlike the original 1970s VW Camper, the modern Danbury version also has a water-cooled, duel petrol and bio-fuel engine, can do up to 40 miles per gallon and has a top speed of around 85mph. And every Camper comes with a full three-year mechanical warranty. Famous Danbury drivers include Oscar winning ‘Wallace & Gromit’ creator Nick Park, ‘The Who’ lead singer Pete Townsend, DJ Neil Fox, and the daughter of the Duke of Westminster. The VW Danbury camper costs from £22,999 for the basic Amigo to £34,499 for the luxurious SE model.
